Obituary:

Velma Jean Bess, age 74 died Thursday March 18, 2004 at her home in Nashville, TN.

She was born at Dongola, Mo July 29, 1929 daughter of the late Norman and Rita Sample Shell. She married Johnny Williams in 1944 and he died in 1945, a casualty of WWII. Velma was a retired telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Cape Girardeau, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had resided in Cape Girardeau until about one year ago.

Survivors include; a daughter and son-in-law Rita and Jim McDonald, Gallatin, TN, one brother, Burk Shell, Advance, MO, four sisters; Mary Lou Winchester, Cape Girardeau, Carol Costello, Advance, Charlene King, Crystal City, MO, Brenda Vangennip, Marble Hill, three grand daughters; Krystall and David Gentry, Brentwood, TN, Sundei and Kevin Granberg, Panama City, FL, Nikki Hampton, Gallatin, TN, four great grandchildren; Cassi, James, and Brianna Granberg and Gracie Hampton.

Preceding her in death was three brothers; Eugene, Grant and Bob Shell, three sisters; Norma L. Nelson, Joann Parker and Barbara Shell.

Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 11:00 am at the funeral home chapel with Dr. John Englehart officiating. Internment will follow in the Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery near Marble Hill.
