Obituary:

Charles "Chalk" Givens, 87, of Glen Allen, Mo, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, MO.

He was born November 18, 1921, at Allenville, Missouri son of Ancil and Grace Smith Givens. He and Earlene Medlock were married in 1947, and later married Velma "Deanie" Crites on October 12, 1974.

Chalk had many friends from his construction days and farming, but more recently his mule buddies. He raised Belgian horses and mules for many years. he knew all the people at the sale barns and he participated in the SEMO District Fair for about 20 years. He never met a stranger and always had a smile.

He also was a member of the Local #513 Hoisting Engineer for 47 years and a member of the First Baptist Church of Delta and attended the Lutesville General Baptist Church.

He proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army, where he fought in Normandy; Northern France; Ardennes; Central Europe; and Rhineland earning five bronze stars.

Survivors include: his wife Velma "Deanie" Givens of Glen Allen, one son; Wayne Givens of Glen Allen, two daughters; Vicki Smith of Jefferson City, MO, Diann Newell of Cape Girardeau, one sister; Gladys Brown of Delta, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM, at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Gene Robbins officiating. Burial will be in the Bollinger County Memorial Park Cemetery near Marble Hill with full military honors provided by the Missouri Honors Team.
